About
Ted Gerber began his career as a piano technician in the early ’80s while studying music theory and composition at York University in Toronto. An apprenticeship with an established German Factory Technician led to an abundance of work opportunity. Initially a way to finance studies has become a career lasting more than 35 years.
After working in and around the GTA for a few years, Ted registered his business in December 1983. Connecting with the
Toronto Baldwin piano representatives (consistently near the top of annual retail sales for Baldwin worldwide) Ted grew from floor tuning to handling the bulk of their concert and artist service, as well as managing their warranty repairs. In those years, Tony Mayer and Bill Goodfellow played key roles in his development as a technician. In 1992 Ted was invited to the Boston Symphony’s summer home at Tanglewood Music Center in Lennox Mass to assist with the installation and prepping of concert grands for their summer season. Under the eye of Baldwin US’ Chief Concert Technician, the late Andrei Svetlichny (NYC), Ted continued his development. He was invited back in later years to again take part in the opening of the summer season.
In the early ‘90s, Ted successfully passed the Piano Technician’s Guild practical and theoretical exams, attaining the Registered Piano Technician designation. His tuning score was high enough that he was asked to consider becoming one of a handful of registered Tuning Examiners in Canada. Ted was the first Canadian technician to contribute to Larry Fine’s The Piano Book, North America’s pre-eminent consumer guide to piano purchasing. He was also one of the first Canadian technicians to put to use the Reyburn Cyber Tuner, a sophisticated computer driven tuning aid which he used to greatly increase the speed and accuracy of tuning in a multi-piano setting.
For more than 30 years Ted has worked in tandem with Rob O’Brien at the shop (now in Caledon). Together they bring 75 years of experience and between them manage all facets of piano maintenance and repairs: from soundboard, bridge and pinblock replacement to tuning, regulating and final voicing.
